Boxcryptor Product Updates – June 2018
The world is constantly changing at a fast pace, this is a matter of fact. The world of information technology is changing at an even faster pace. Whether it is improvements on one front or the emergence of a security flaw on another front. Keeping up with the all the developments can be hard, yet it is extremely important - especially for the development of software in such a fast-changing environment. Regular updates are important for every software to keep up with the change of the environment the software “lives” in.
We at Boxcryptor, of course need to adapt to changes in the environment of our software, too. Therefore, we inform you on a regular basis about the updates of, and the related changes made to our software, to keep you up-to-date, as well.
Full support for Windows 10 1803
Microsoft included numerous changes to their OS with their last update version 1803, also known as “Windows 10 April 2018 Update”.
This Windows 10 version added numerous new features that have the objectives to make deployment of, and updating the OS faster and easier by making use of the cloud, improving the OS analytics and putting more emphasis on security and privacy.
Maybe the most important new feature is the new Timeline. It is replacing the Task View button. The new Timeline not only shows you what apps are currently running, but it can show you all apps you have been using on a windows 10 PC in the last 30 days – across devices (i.e. you can continue working on a document you created on one device, on another device you log-in, with your Windows 10 account. Other important features include easy sharing capabilities, quick Bluetooth pairing, a dictation feature and many more
When there is a lot that changes in an OS, by a large update like the biannual Windows update, software providers need to react to the changes and ensure their software is still running well, after the rollout of such a large OS update – So did we:
Since version 2.25.777, released at the beginning of April, Boxcryptor for Windows is fully compatible with the latest Windows 10 update.

Launching the account page in our web app, was the next step, in transferring all account related functionality to the web app. And we think it was an important step forward.
Besides the amazing new interface, the new account page is much faster and is optimized for being used on your mobile devices – in all honesty, most of us are using mostly mobile devices anyhow, right?
And not only did the account page receive cosmetic and performance related improvements. We also included an incredibly helpful new feature:
It is now possible to upgrade your account directly on the new account page.
Hence, you can now upgrade from your Boxcryptor Personal license to a Boxcryptor Business license directly on your account page – that’s super convenient.
Russian now available on iOS and macOS
There is good news for our Russian users with an iPhone or Mac:
The Boxcryptor app is now available in Russian, when the system language of your iPhone or Mac is set to Russian.
We say: “Храните Ваши данные в безопасности от посторонних глаз - в России и во всем мире”
2-Factor-Authentication for Teams
“Boxcryptor for Teams” customers (i.e. customers with a Boxcryptor Company or Enterprise license) have waited for this feature and it is available now – 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) via TOTP.
As we announced at the end of last year, we have implemented 2FA for all our individual users, to increase the security of their Boxcryptor accounts.
And we are happy to tell our “Boxcryptor for Teams” customers that 2FA via TOTP, using authenticator apps, is now fully available for all team members. Therefore, your company data is safer than ever, even if employees would use weak passwords or if passwords of employees would be breached: With 2FA we are offering a further layer of security for your precious data.
News from the Cloud
Firstly in “News from the Cloud”, we want to welcome new cloud providers to our growing family of clouds supported by Boxcryptor:
Boxcryptor now fully supports Microsoft SharePoint 2013. Meaning:
- We have improved support for on-premise file sync and share solutions
- Added support for OwnCloud and NextCloud, the leading open source file hosting softwares which one can install and run on their own servers
Even if self-hosted, our users benefit from end-to-end encryption, for example to be protected against internal threads (the “all-mighty system administrator”), or a third-party hosting provider for these solutions.
In other cloud news: Not only did we change our service – so did Dropbox:
The popular cloud storage provider recently improved its file structure for Dropbox Business customers. For this purpose, Dropbox introduced the “purple folder” and “team space”. The team space now serves as a root and contains all team- and personal folders. The personal folders are the, so-called purple folders, where access and shares set by the owner of the purple folder, just like in your personal Dropbox before.
For more information on the Dropbox root structure check their Help center
Is this affecting your Dropbox folder mounted in your Boxcryptor drive? It does, but you don’t need to worry about it. Why? Because Boxcryptor has you covered.
We fully support this new root structure of Dropbox and there is absolutely nothing, you have to do about it. Well, besides updating Boxcryptor to the latest version, of course.
