Amazon Cloud Drive is Supported by Boxcryptor On all Platforms

Amazon Cloud Drive Now Supported by Boxcryptor On all Platforms

We are happy to inform you that after an update at Amazon Cloud Drive, this provider is now available at Boxcryptor on all platforms. Before, Amazon did not offer a sync client for its cloud. Now, they do. This means that you can now not only use Amazon Cloud Drive in our mobile apps and the Boxcryptor Portable, but in our desktop versions for Windows and macOS as well.

Works on Boxcryptor for macOS, Auto-Detection on Windows

From now on, a workaround with the Boxcryptor Portable is not necessary anymore. If you are on a Windows machine, Amazon Cloud Drive will be detected by Boxcryptor automatically after you installed the Amazon Cloud Drive desktop app here. You can check for yourself, in the Boxcryptor settings, under locations.

On Boxcryptor for macOS you can use Amazon Cloud Drive as well. However, you have to add it to your Boxcryptor locations manually, once.

Amazon Cloud Drive with Boxcryptor Mobile Versions

On the mobile side, Amazon Cloud Drive was directly implemented in the Boxcryptor apps for iOS and Android, which are available for free in the app stores.

If you like our apps, please rate us in the app stores. If you have any other feedback: Please let us know. We are always happy to hear our user’s input and feedback.

How We Made it Work Without a Sync Client – The Portable

No sync client means that there is no cloud folder on your machine where we can point Boxcryptor to. This was not a problem on mobile – on Android, or iOS. On desktop systems we made it work with the Boxcryptor Portable that allowed you to use Boxcryptor for Amazon Cloud Drive on Windows, macOS and Linux. However, switching to the desktop version now that a sync client is available, is a good choice because it is much faster.
For Boxcryptor Portable, iOS and Android, we integrated Amazon Cloud Drive via Amazon’s own API.

Robert – our CTO – explains:

As Amazon did not offer sync clients for desktop platforms, we decided to integrate Amazon Cloud Drive and S3 in our Portable version, which directly accesses the provider’s API without having to rely on a sync client. Besides being able to encrypt their Amazon Cloud Drive, users finally also had a software for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux to access their Amazon Cloud Drive files.

Amazon S3, on the other hand, still does not have a sync client. Therefore, you still have to use the Boxcryptor Portable if you want to protect your data at Amazon S3 on your desktop machines.
