Boxcryptor: News and Updates in May 2022

Summer is slowly returning to Germany and despite the good weather, we continue to work diligently to improve Boxcryptor for you and keep it stable.
We would like to give you a quick overview of what we have been working on in the last weeks.

Device Codes: Emergency Codes for 2FA on Windows and macOS

Unfortunately, it happens more often than you think that someone loses the second factor for 2-factor authentication or doesn’t have it at hand. To make it easier to access Boxcryptor again in this case, we have developed device codes.
The requirement is that you are signed into Boxcryptor on your Windows or macOS device. Now, if you want to log into your account on iOS, Android or on www.boxcryptor.com and you don’t have the second factor at hand, you can select Device Codes. A code will then be displayed on your Windows device for you to authenticate with.

Boxcryptor for Windows

Use the Windows Search in Boxcryptor

Good news: You can now use Windows search for files encrypted with Boxcryptor. This is not a new feature for filenames, but from now on the search also works with texts inside Boxcryptor files. Here you can find a short tutorial on how to enable window search in Boxcryptor encrypted files.

New Supported Providers: GMX Cloud and Web.de Online Storage

If you are a user of GMX Cloud or Web.de Online Storage on a Windows device, you can now encrypt your data with Boxcryptor from these two providers as well.

Fixes: Google Drive and the Recycle Bin on Windows 11

Maybe you didn’t even notice it: On Windows 11, Boxcryptor had some compatibility issues with the Recycle Bin. We have fixed that. Also, Google Drive shortcuts to folders with filename encryption enabled work fine again as well.

Small Technical Updates

They might not be visible, but still important: We have made a few technical improvements to bring Boxcryptor up to date. For example, we updated CBFS Connect to the latest 2020 version, and we are now using WebView2 instead of Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF). Since this update, Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 support is dropped and new local accounts can no longer be created.
One thing we are a bit proud of: We have reduced the size of the MSI installer file from 107 MB to 17 MB, which means that your important Boxcryptor updates will now complete much faster.

Boxcryptor for iOS: New Provider Added

On iOS, you can now securely encrypt your data in LeitzCloud with Boxcryptor.

macOS: We Are Still Working on the Brand New macOS Version

You may have already noticed: Apple’s innovations regarding their handling of APIs for external services are making waves in the cloud industry. That’s not the only reason we’re working on a brand new macOS version that’s up to date with the latest technology. The beta is already available and we are working at full speed on the final version. Here is all the info on the macOS beta and why it is necessary.

You can get the latest version of Boxcryptor on our website.
